Progress S.r.l. — Odour Emission Measurement & Olfactory Impact Assessment
Since 1996, Progress S.r.l. has been providing dynamic olfactometry (EN 13725), chemical monitoring, electronic nose monitoring, atmospheric dispersion simulations, environmental consulting, and expert witness services in civil and criminal proceedings.
About Us
Progress S.r.l. was founded in 1996, introducing dynamic olfactometry to Italy for the first time — a method that would quickly become the gold standard for determining odour concentration in gaseous samples. The company’s activity began with monitoring odorous emissions from composting plants, primarily located in Lombardy. The range of services expanded rapidly, introducing new test methods and continuously improving established ones. Over the years, environmental consulting and atmospheric modelling services were added alongside the monitoring activities.
Progress S.r.l.’s expertise in olfactometric monitoring has grown in parallel with its knowledge of laboratory methods and instrumentation.
Precise. Accredited. Experienced.
WHY CHOOSE US
ACCREDIA-Accredited Laboratory
Accredited by ACCREDIA (no. 00475) under ISO/IEC 17025:2018 for dynamic olfactometry — the first laboratory in Italy to achieve this accreditation, since 2004.
Active since
1996
Nearly 30 years of experience in odour measurement, with approximately 5,000 olfactometric tests carried out every year. One of the largest olfactometric laboratories in Europe.
Scientific
Partnership
Long-standing collaboration with the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering “Giulio Natta” at Politecnico di Milano — one of Italy’s most prestigious research institutions.
Areas of Expertise
COMPREHENSIVE ODOUR MONITORING SERVICES
Environmental Impact & Dispersion Studies
Using proven atmospheric dispersion models, Progress S.r.l. simulates the spread of odours, chemical pollutants, and particulate matter across the surrounding territory. From predictive assessments for permit applications to compliance verification and innovative reverse dispersion modelling — we cover the full spectrum.

Frequently
Asked Questions
Questions we often asked
What is dynamic olfactometry?
Dynamic olfactometry (standard UNI EN 13725) is the official European method for measuring odour concentration in gaseous samples. A trained panel of human assessors determines the dilution at which an odorous sample reaches the olfactory detection threshold. The result is expressed in European odour units per cubic metre (ouE/m³).
Is your laboratory officially accredited?
Yes. Our olfactometric laboratory is accredited by ACCREDIA (no. 00475) under ISO/IEC 17025:2018 — we were the first laboratory in Italy to achieve this accreditation on this method, in 2004.
What types of facilities do you monitor?
We work with a wide range of industries: composting and waste treatment plants, landfills, wastewater treatment plants, biogas and anaerobic digestion plants, chemical and petrochemical industries, livestock farms, food processing, rendering, and more.
What is the difference between dynamic olfactometry and an electronic nose?
Dynamic olfactometry measures odour concentration at the emission source, before it disperses into the air. An electronic nose monitors ambient air continuously — detecting odour where it can actually be perceived by the public, such as at a facility boundary or in a residential area.
Can you support us in legal or permit proceedings?
Yes. Our staff has extensive experience as court-appointed and party-appointed technical experts in civil and criminal proceedings related to olfactory pollution. We also provide full support for environmental authorisation applications.
